Mineral vs semi synthetic vs fully synthetic engine oil

What the difference is between mineral, semi synthetic and fully synthetic engine oil, and how to choose the right one for your car.

Mineral oil

Refined directly from crude oil. It is the most affordable choice and suits many older engines, but it generally needs changing more often, around every 5,000 km as a common guide.

Semi synthetic (synthetic blend)

A mix of mineral and synthetic base oils. It offers better protection than mineral oil at a moderate price, with a common interval of around 7,500 km.

Fully synthetic

Made from synthetic base oils for the most stable performance in heat and at cold starts. It usually costs the most but lasts longest, often around 10,000 km. Many newer engines, especially those that specify 0W-20, are designed for it.

How to choose

  • Start with the grade (for example 5W-30) and quality standard in your owner’s manual. That matters more than the oil type.
  • If your manual allows several grades, a synthetic oil is a sensible upgrade for city driving and hot summers.
  • Do not switch to a thinner grade than your engine is designed for.

What does 5W-30 mean?

The first number with the W is how easily the oil flows when cold; lower flows faster at start-up. The second number is how thick it stays at engine running temperature. Use the grade your manual lists.

Questions

Can I switch from mineral to synthetic oil?+

In most engines yes, as long as the grade matches what your manual allows. Check the manual for your car.

Can I mix different engine oils?+

Topping up with a different brand of the same grade in an emergency is generally fine, but at the next change use one oil throughout.

This guide is general advice. Your owner’s manual is the final word for your car. Not sure what fits? Send us your car model on WhatsApp and we will check before dispatch.
