Signs your brake pads need replacing
The warning signs of worn brake pads and shoes, how long they usually last, and what to replace together.
Warning signs
- A high-pitched squeal when braking (many pads have a metal wear indicator that makes this sound)
- A grinding or scraping noise, which can mean the pad is worn to the metal
- The car takes longer to stop or the pedal feels soft
- The car pulls to one side when braking
- Vibration in the pedal or steering when braking
- The brake warning light is on
How long do brake pads last?
It varies widely with driving style, traffic and the pad material. City driving with lots of braking wears pads faster. Have them inspected at regular services, and follow your mechanic’s measurement rather than a fixed kilometre figure.
Replace in pairs
Always replace pads on both wheels of the same axle together so the car brakes evenly. If the discs are scored or below their minimum thickness, they need attention too.
Safety first
Brakes are a safety part. If you notice any of the signs above, have them checked by a qualified mechanic before driving further.

Are front and rear brakes the same?+
Not always. Many cars have disc brakes with pads at the front and drum brakes with shoes at the rear. Choose your car on our brakes page to see what fits.
